Oregano from Mexico has a much stronger flavor than the common Italian and Greek oreganos found on grocery store shelves. This herb has quickly gained popularity with some chefs in recent years for its strong flavor and subtle sweetness that are unique to this oregano from south of the border. Mexican Oregano’s flavor is still very similar so it is a good substitute for the more traditional Mediterranean oreganos as long as it is added at about half the amount called. Add it to Mexican and southwest recipes calling for “Mexican Oregano” at the amount called for to add a potent oregano flavor.

Mexican oregano is from a different plant family than traditional oregano, a plant called Verbenaceae.  This plant is also part of the Lemon family, so you can expect it to have undertones of citrus which is commonly used in the cooking of Mexican food.

You can buy Mexican Oregano from most supermarkets, and can even get it fresh at Latin markets. You should store this spice in a cool dry place to make it last longer.  Once a recipe calls for oregano, a good trick is to pour it in your hand and rub your hands together to get out more of the potency and flavor from this herb.
