Paprika is intimately associated with Hungarian cuisine especially paprikash and goulash. Many spiced sausages incorporate it, including the Spanish chorizos. Paprika is often used as a garnish, sprinkled on eggs, hors d’ouvres, and salads for color.

Some would say that Paprika is a staple to have in the kitchen, just like having salt and pepper.  It has such great flavor and a beautiful red color that is unmistakable.  While it might be the traditional spice in Hungary (not to mention there are over 8 different grades that vary in flavor and hotness), it is now used everywhere.  Specific areas to use paprika are in dry rubs for different meats, some stews, and soups.  It can also be used in eggs benedict, or to add color to a potato salad.

What is Paprika made of?

Paprika is made from drying and grinding up different types of peppers.  Some versions are spicey, some are sweeter, it all depends on the type you buy. It is specifically from the plant Capsicum annuum.  There are multiple types of this plant, but paprika is made from the Longum group of capsicum annuum, which also includes the spicy chili peppers.  Traditional Spanish paprika is milder in flavor, so there are not as many chili peppers in this one.

Health Benefits of Paprika

Not only is it delicious and versatile in the kitchen, but it also has many health benefits.  Paprika is considered high in antioxidants which helps your body get rid of free radicals in your body.  It is specifically high in carotenoids that have beta carotin in it as well as high in Vitamin A and B6.  It is also high in potassium, vitamin E, copper, and iron which can all help increase blood flow, lower blood pressure, and help increase red blood cell formation.
