Saffron Scented Tea

Saffron is a delicious and healthy addition to black, green and herbal teas! Research has confirmed that saffron has anti-depressant and relaxing qualities. An extract of saffron was even featured on the Dr. Oz Show as a remedy for emotional, nervous eating!
Saffron might be the world’s most expensive spice, but luckily you only need tiny amounts! One or two threads of good quality saffron (like ours) are all one needs to brew a cup of tea.
Saffron threads take a while to infuse into hot water: up to 10 minutes! So, what if you want to add it to your black teas, which only take up to 5 minutes to brew to perfection? Either powder the saffron beforehand so it infuses faster, or make a saffron extract (see recipe here!) to add as needed to your tea or other dishes.
If you are making Chinese-style green tea with saffron, you can just add one or two threads to the teapot. Since Chinese green tea is usually only steeped for a few seconds, and then is continually re-steeped, this is also a way to get the goodness from the threads without a cup of tea that’s too strong.
Saffron pairs well with other calming flower teas such as rose petals, linden, chamomile, etc. For the best health and flavor value, let it steep up to 15 minutes before straining.
Just a word of caution: It is easy to add saffron to teas, but it is important to not use too much. In excess it has a strong, medicinal taste, and like all powerful spices and herbs, overdoses are not healthy.
